Discontinuation of At-Home Learning Program

We have all faced great uncertainty in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Kirbyville CISD appreciates the support the school district has received from our community as we adapt to provide a safe learning environment for all students. In response to the pandemic, at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year, Kirbyville CISD provided families an option to attend school virtually and started the year with 85 percent of our students attending in-person and 15 percent online.

Through the first six-weeks, we monitored the progress of all of our students both on-campus and virtual. While our on-campus students are thriving, the majority attending online have been unsuccessful with 70 percent of virtual students failing the first six-weeks due to poor attendance and lack of participation. Despite frequent communication with parents of virtual learners and attempts to provide support, the District has not seen improvement in engagement from online students and the failure rate continues to rise. Due to widespread concern for the success of all students at KCISD, the Board of Trustees met on October 12, 2020 and voted unanimously to discontinue the District’s remote learning platform.

In order to ensure that all Kirbyville CISD students receive quality instruction with active participation in the learning environment, all students will return to campus for face-to-face learning beginning October 19, 2020. The District recognizes the challenges of providing a safe learning environment in response to COVID-19 and is committed to rigorously implementing its health and safety protocols and actively monitoring the health of our students and staff. Should health concerns develop, the District will respond accordingly and as allowed by the Texas Education Agency. Moreover, should students or staff members be required to quarantine, the District will continue to provide instruction utilizing all resources at its disposal, including virtual education at the parent’s election when necessary.

If your family is currently enrolled in Kirbyville CISD’s virtual program, your students should return to campus October 19. However, if your family is not yet comfortable returning to school, the following options are available for educating your student(s) and remain in compliance with the compulsory attendance laws:

  1. Withdraw to home school.
  2. Request transfer to a neighboring school that offers a remote learning environment.
  3. Enroll in the Virtual School Network, K12, or other similar online education platform.

Kirbyville CISD is committed to providing all residents of the District an excellent education in a safe environment. We will continue to measure our success by the academic progress of our students and adjust as necessary to ensure an excellent educational program. Thank you for your continued support as we welcome all of our students back to campus and continue with a positive school year for our Wildcat community.
